Nine Tenths of the Law: I

  by Sean Padlo

Jacob Morningstar stepped out of his vehicle, tying his long brown hair back, and was already moving toward the back entrance at the right end of the Fort Monroe parking lot, when he noticed a crowd gathered on the courtyard grounds near the main entrance. In the middle of the crowd, a tiny waif of a girl wearing a yellow-flowered sundress currently held a full-grown man over her head. She smiled brightly, arms held straight overhead, as the man’s body appeared to…expand. Jacob glanced at his watch, saw no one waiting for him by the service entrance, and headed toward the crowd instead.

Although businesses like this were still relatively new to the populace, and the laws regarding them were rudimentary at best, Jacob noted that some business owners enjoyed bringing a festive, P.T. Barnumesque panache to their workplaces. Here, it seemed that the owner
a curious, darkly strange man who went by the surname of Pyxhad fashioned himself a place of both utility and pageantry. Jacob thought it strange that anything so extreme could happen in such a place as this that would require his expertise, though not once had he spoken with Mr. Pyx. He had, and apparently would, only be dealing with the manager, an excitable fellow named William Nash.

Once the man held in the air by the little girl had grown impossibly huge, the girl shoved him up and away from her, where he flipped once and landed on his feet. The crowd applauded. The massive behemoth of a man stepped back onto the platform. He took the girl by the waist, and threw her into the air. She rose higher and higher still before slowing at last, only to find herself hovering there momentarily, just a blot of yellow in a powder-blue sky. It reminded Jacob of the Roadrunner cartoons where the coyote runs off a plateau, defying gravity until he noticed and pulled a sign from out of nowhere with “?!” scrawled on it, just before he fell. There was no sign in this scenario, just a crowd of people holding their collective breath, waiting for the girl to fall. Instead, she arched her back and shrieked as dark, leathery wings burst from her shoulder blades. She tucked into a ball as her wings unfurled before diving earthward. Her wings folded back, and she accelerated, until she became nothing more than a blur rushing headlong toward the ground.

The crowd gasped, ducking their heads, and started to scatter. Jacob noted that no one stood fast under the falling child to try and rescue her. The girl spread her wings wide and flew just over their heads. Now they began to cheer, those cheers increasing to a roar of approval as she flipped and tumbled through the air, at last coming to land gently on the grass. Applause exploded from the crowd, and she bowed to them then, her wings tucking and retreating into her back. Jacob could see only two small holes in the back of her sundress. No blood, no trace of her massive wings. Not even a single black feather.

Jacob smiled at the little girl's performance. It was most impressive, and he found himself applauding right along with the crowd. He watched the behemoth slowly deflate back to his normal size. The whole thing happened before the business was open for the day. It reminded him of those people who tell jokes and hype the studio audience before a talk show begins. Jacob checked his watch again and realized it was eleven minutes after eight in the morning. He would have time to take a few looks around before meeting up with Mr. Nash and getting down to work.

Fort Monroe was most recently purchased about three years ago, and major work ensued to secure the building. But as it was once fortified against attacks from the outside, it now served its purpose as to be guarded from within. Jacob supposed that the man and the child from the performance had at least level twos, but it was more likely that the girl had a three…or even possibly a four. By law, security for ephemerals from level three to level five is required to be multi-faceted, complex, convoluted really, and exhaustively thorough. And expensive.

   Fort Monroe
or more precisely the land itself where the fort now stoodhad a dark, sordid history. The land was named Old Point Comfort by the settlers of Jamestown as they’d passed through the area. Local natives were used, abused, then driven out and massacred. Fort Algernon was built upon the Point, then accidentally burned to the ground. The fortification was built and rebuilt repeatedly for years, but they all crumbled or had some calamity or another befall the area. Fort George was built there, and boat after boat full of African slaves passed through the area before a hurricane turned Fort George to ruin.

The fort became a Union stronghold despite being in Confederate territory. It was a pro-slave area that became a bastion of freedom for runaway slaves, being dubbed “Freedom’s Fortress.” Fort Monroe was officially decommissioned in 2005, and was eventually purchased by a group under the orders of Mr. Pyx. The new owners found it would be, for whatever the reason, a good idea to reform the fort’s exterior to take on a five-pointed star shape. “You can see us from the sky,” Mr. Nash had exclaimed to him over the phone in an exuberantly high-yet-throaty voice, “and it looks great on maps!”

Jacob looked up at the bright blue sky with its magnificent, cottony clouds and wondered if this job would turn out different from the rest. Land is like a man’s spirit, it remembers the good and the bad, and the dark weighs heavy upon it. Jacob wondered if Mr. Pyx understood the power of the soil, and that of pentacles. He shook himself out of those thoughts and looked around, surprised that he’d already reached the service entrance, and he noticed that this spot offered him a unique vantage point: he could see the repetitive paths of the security detail. Always in pairs, they covered the area well. He saw that the visitors had lined up at the front entrance. Even though he was good at his job and did it very well, Jacob always felt a degree of dread over the work he was hired for: extraction.

Aeternus Aevum Analogia

The industry now turning here has been doing so for awhile
The mirrored analogy lies in the striations of our smile
It appears in genuflections of an ordinary grimace
And disappears in the injections of our blood's burning furnace
Momentary in a slipstream plunged into the intermittent
Turned inside out from a synapse into another galaxy
The trick is understanding that our plasma is our currency
Space and time itself remain nothing but the flesh and blood of God
We are just the garment he wears which appears to us very odd
That's because we have displaced Him according to his greater plan
Written in the script of paradox spiraling through modern man
Paranoid paranormal paradisaical to the bone
Steeped in ecstatic tortures infernal divinity our home
What is truth but loyalty to an ancient handed down notion
Faith in the veracity of staying solid firm and steadfast
Meanwhile knowing all along our own physical bodies won't last

Our fidelity to being correct will someday backfire
The friction it engenders may lead to our funeral pyre
This is why we must remember to forget most of the time
Forgetting to remember always promotes remaining sane
The more we memorize the further we clog up our own brain
In the act of hypnotism we become are own victim
Staring into this dark prism we transform our innocence
Our experience observed by a bright myriad audience
Oblivious our isolation stays just an illusion
Blind to the rich assembly that exists as an intrusion
Wearing the stellar mantle a fallen crown upon our head
Neglecting the difference between the living and the dead
While one must disappear from here the other emerges there
It escapes our comprehension that this points to everywhere
Except when we perceive that time and space are one and the same

We forget our magnetic interaction with the stars
It remains constant between us no matter where we are
Unbroken and perpetual connected at the core
As beyond so beneath we should never mistake our dream
For something we can't realize existing in between
By focusing our vision on the here and now instead
Disembodied for a time more or less within our head
We can learn to recover our lost sense of sanity
After tumbling over in this distant proximity
Awaken to the furthest always being near at hand
Remember the one whose eyes open when you close your eyes
Going north in winter traces our passage from this world
Before our lives began here we were under different skies
By unclenching our balled fists our blood banners are unfurled

Everyone alive stands upright their own sentinel
Illuminating the current hive like a candle
Conducting electricity with our flesh and blood
Manifesting on the plains of diminishing lands
Forming this unique chain of a legacy of hands
Converging on a point parallel to each other
Thread the needle through our eye to a long lost mother
Weave the garment made of skies cloaking our own brother
Shed the warm hide that was grown such a long time ago
Dread the pride that you've shown for not knowing it was so
Ever going on this ride that is continual
Like snapping shut and picking open a pair of locks
Without keys we escape the prison of paradox

Truth has been described as a twi-edged flaming sword
This depiction remains a lovely metaphor
It cuts both ways and also burns down villages
Those who think it absolute remain adamant
It scalds and razes those untrained to handle it
To see within it we may have to close our eyes
To know it better we must learn its new disguise
Overcome that which we're told has been forbidden
There's nothing wrong with knowledge as information
The real danger lies in gaining a distinction
Thinking we know the difference between right and wrong
Unravels the harmony of our mutual song

Remain steadfast in holding off conviction
Trade our ears with another's in dictation
Swap our shoes with each other just to listen
Serve others as you would want to be treated
Stare into these mirrors however fleeting
This behavior's in accordance with reason
Our liberator arrives with the season
The protector's concealed within our own skin
All is revealed when we take time to begin
Thinking we've started just because we're awake
We all share that in common a big mistake

The fact is we haven't even begun
Our transformation under a new sun
There is no reason for us to pretend
That every moment we do not transcend
Although we may be seen as illusion
Our identities just a confusion
In the present with no past or future
To help focus keep up the inversion
The blurring at worst doesn't go that far
Keep looking til you first see the polestar

Stormcrows

after witches

They ride like men in tales of snow

where a fire-witch mates with birds,

but in a tale that is real as calendric

hours, that ride on coal winds of ice,

when the cold isn't snow but stabbing

needles in a spine, in sleep swords

caress warm skins, in wake shivering

embers alight burns, the real witch

strings eggs like pearls
 a wreath

around her neck purposed from birds

and threads.  So, the dream shows

the murder
 storm of wings  their

heads missing, strewn as offering

across tiled tarmac, pathway of

prayers, where the witch alludes

a shrine
 stake of stale logs hacked

from silver-bearded oaks
 and fire

is round as the body of bowls, bodies

of crows, beaks of coal, winds of past

and flesh of future; they know from

the way their wings flap time is here,

one sip will send a whip down her throat.

Ravens

The beasts have retired beneath trees

as shadows of fallen leaves; fruits

have withered baring branches thick

and dismembered like masticated limbs

of skeletons
 graphic night and hubris-

moon shining on the hair of seas, silver like

keeling of seals, indigo rumble like waves;

sea-lions have surfaced, and the unknown

untethered.  A second moon slithers into

a sinking oasis, island’s body ridged like

indelible wrinkles on a sage’s hands; the

direction is misguided, third-eye onyx sheen,

and the cyclops has gouged out its vision

but the beasts are sharp, their ears picking

on burning wind; the fire gets nearer; woods

wrapped in a diaphanous whimper.  They

stir like hills under heavy barks
 stooping

necks; hollow sockets on face of trees

The Holographic Paradox

(Luminous buttes as seen through a photo multiplication tube lens)                                                            photo by the editor (shaun lawton).

Welcome to the Freezine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, as we begin the second decade of our transcription across the worldwide interconnected computer networks linked by a wide array of electronic, wireless, and optical synchronizing technologies.  As those faithful readers who've paid enough attention to this blog masquerading as a webzine already know, I was compelled to begin putting this online fanzine out in the summer of 2009. According to our meta-periodical's legend, the true 'editors' of this digital broadside are a 'fleet of supremely adaptable nanobots flowing through my bloodstream.'

During that innocuous summer I became possessed by the idea that a microfleet of nano-computers had somehow entered into the synapses of my brain. One of their earliest missives was to inform me that they had assimilated the info they needed for a correlative attempt at publishing this daily. Apparently, they gathered information from masses of demographics both here and  abroad to determine the optimal format to broadcast this digest.  That they resolved for it to be delivered in a blog format still puzzles many subscribers, myself included. Yet I've never questioned their rationalizationmuch less their motivesfor having spurred me on toward putting out this semi-monthly electronic literary booklet.  Every time they messaged me (from inside my own consciousness) it was in order to prompt me to put out the next issue of the Freezine. After several issues they made it clear that their dispatches were being beamed in to my head from the future.

In order to catch up with all the memorandums sent to me by the microhorde (or nanoswarm as I sometimes refer to them) devotees of the Freezine would be advised to catch up on my editorial comments at the end of every issue, which ordinarily occur on the final day of the month after the daily posts have run their course (refer to the Blog Archive located in the upper right margin of this website). When the Freezine is operating at optimal efficiency, it publishes daily episodes of a serialized novella between Mondays and Thursdays, and stand-alone short stories typically on Fridays. Otherwise, it may post anything at any time, without reason or rhyme. The BloodHost (as it has also been called)—that cybernetic flotilla that's invaded my cerebrum—began lessening the frequency of its demands after the first dozen or so issues of our subliterary cyber-rag went up.  I still don't know if that was due to some sort of magnetically conducted plasma interference during their attempted transmissions, or what. Luckily for us, last year their communications became more prevalent, allowing this free virtual online creative writing workshop to recommence.

The most recent nano-missives I've received seem to have originated from a lone outpost near Jupiter—emanating from a surviving team of human beings stranded on Ceres (as far as I can figure)from sometime in the future.  I've deduced they must be stranded in a colony established on that minor planet, located at the outer periphery of the asteroid belt. By encoding everything onto nano-circuits somehow embedded on neutrinos that were beamed into the heart of Sagittarius A*, they managed to send this fleet of microchips back in time to the year 2009 where it was absorbed by a hospital patient transporter on duty in the process of bringing an aging war veteran in for a nuclear medicine stress test (I have expressed this part of my narrative from a third person point of view in order to gain much needed objectivity). The C-arm parked out in the hallway of the radiology department was on and humming strangely as the transporter passed by returning the wheelchair, when a blue arc of laser light flared in his peripheral vision, causing momentary blindness.  He stopped pushing the wheelchair for several seconds, blinking in an effort to recover his eyesight. His vision slowly swam back into focus after a few moments.

That patient transporter, Paul Aman, lived in a mid-western city somewhere in continental North America. It was about ten years ago when he first had the idea to start up a free publication of illustrated short stories and serialized novellas on the world wide web.  A fan of science fiction since he was a child, little did he realize that his effort at establishing a fanzine online was incited by an imperative sent back in time to possess him into doing something for the love of the endeavor rather than to try making money from it. As the nano-horde encoded his neural network with sub-programmed commands apparently (from what turns out to later become a shed alternate ghost world) sent in a final desperate attempt to stabilize planet Earth's timeline in order to develop a more cohesive and sustainable post-cybernetic environment. It took Paul several years, as the receptor and carrier of this electromagnetic wave of information, to begin realizing the true shape of events this channeled interception from the future had spurred him on to engender.

Yes, Paul Aman is just my alias. As editor in chief at the Freezine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, I've come to realize, from a sharply honed intuition, that he/I wasn't the only human subject acting as a conducive instrument relaying commands sent tacitly our way from the stranded base of last surviving humans on Ceres. There are likely thousands of us and potentially millions; for all I know, the entire human race has received this electromagnetically delegated assortment of directives by now—each with its own respective set of mandates. I've been thinking lately about how neutrinos leave streaks of light when they pass through the purest water. As they penetrate our planet's oceans, they must barely leave a discernible ambient flash, too brief and faint to be registered by a person's eyes. Cephalopods and various insects have been known for their ability to detect polarized light. But I digress. It has led to an even stranger thought.

The neutrino itself may have already been revealed to remain the entirety of all universes compressed into a singularity which manages to be mirrored by a duplication process not unlike cloning from a branched off membrane which is assimilated into the growing milieu of the morphological universeitself the opposed counterbalance of the singularity altogether familiar to our own yet somehow incomprehensibly different. One way of thinking of what I mean is to visualize countless rain drops in a mind-exercise representing every neutrino as actual reflections of the one singular neutrino in existence and that exact solid object appears to be our universe alongside this planet with its life and current species of humanity yet surviving upon it as we apparently continue to plunge in motion through a process involving the spacetime continuum. Of course this neutrino remains the only thing faster than lightas it projects through a million different facets stitching us into existence.

There's grounds to suggest this singularity keeps repeating its programming in a never ending loop of such gradually decaying simulation that the differentials spawned grow not into yet more shed ghosts of future developmentsbut rather constantly shape and mold the singular only possible existence here frozen in static eternitypossessed by the illusion of constant movement to the point that even in our resting state of deep sleep every night, occurring with metronomic persistence, we are unable to really wake up from our conditioning to realize this motion conducts us into dreaming.

The reason for this appears to be the evidence we're machines powered by electromagnetic forces beyond our comprehension which nonetheless animate our complete existence with absolute authority right on down to the intricately worked out details of a relatively predetermined future existence destined to remain everlasting despite our inability to understand any single part (much less the whole) of which it's comprised. The fractal holography paradox appears to never blink because we operate on differentiating frequencies while we stare into the same universal mirror.

Which leads us to the present annular location of our progressive planet in the spacetime continuum. As we phase into 2020—the Year of Perfect Vision—the Freezine of Fantasy and Science Fiction continues its undying devotion toward showcasing the written expressions of different individual's uncensored accounts. This creative writing endeavor comes equipped to consider each contributor's unique perspective. The least we (the editors of this electronic tabloid) can do is allow each writer to retain their own voice. The Freezine stands vigilant at the fringes of what is considered to be free speech, facing outward to protect its writers from forces that might otherwise render them silent. The comments section have been opened for all to utilize, using their online ID, or anonymously, whatever the case may be.

Please feel free to email me at   freezinefantasysciencefiction@gmail.com — with a query letter or just drop all pretenses of formality and ask me any questions you have about this online zine, straight up. I'll be happy to read your story and let you know if its a fit for our webzine. My inbox has already received some interesting submissions, so you might want to throw caution to the wind and send me an email, because as soon as I get enough stories together to constitute a well-rounded issue, I'll be publishing the next edition of our community digest for all to read and marvel over and share across their respective social utility networks, such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Pinterest, or by email, if you prefer.

If you're a long time enthusiast of this integral site or a brand newcomer, welcome and thank you for taking interest in one of our favorite pastimes:  reading entertaining stories and admiring sensational artwork that beckons you from the nether realms.  Stay tuned to this channel. We have a slew of surprises waiting for you to stumble upon, coming soon. Share this post today with a friend, and be sure to subscribe by email or on blogger to receive all future dispatches from the Freezine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

THE FOLD

G. Alden Davis wrote his first short story
in high school, and received a creative
writing scholarship for the effort. Soon
afterward he discovered that words were
not enough, and left for art school. He was
awarded the Emeritus Fellowship along
with his BFA from Memphis College of Art
in '94, and entered the videogame industry
as a team leader and 3D artist. He has over
25 published games to his credit. Mr. Davis
is a Burningman participant of 14 years,
and he swings a mean sword in the SCA.
He's also the best friend I ever had. He
was taken away from us last year on Jan
25 and I'll never be able to understand why.
Together we were a fantastic duo, the
legendary Grub Bros. Our secret base
exists on a cross-hatched nexus between
the Year of the Dragon and Dark City.
Somewhere along the tectonic fault
lines of our electromagnetic gathering,
shades of us peel off from the coruscating
pillars and are dropped back into the mix.
The phrase "rest in peace" just bugs me.
I'd rather think that Greg Grub's inimitable
spirit somehow continues evolving along
another manifestation of light itself, a
purple shift shall we say into another
phase of our expanding universe. I
ask myself, is it wishful thinking?
Will we really shed our human skin
like a discarded chrysalis and emerge
shimmering on another wavelength
altogether--or even manifest right
here among the rest without their
even beginning to suspect it? Well
people do believe in ghosts, but I
myself have long been suspicious
there can only be one single ghost
and that's all the stars in the universe
shrinking away into a withering heart
glittering and winking at us like
lost diamonds still echoing all their
sad and lonely songs fallen on deaf
eyes and ears blind to their colorful
emanations. My grub brother always
knew better than what the limits
of this old world taught him. We
explored past the outer peripheries
of our comfort zones to awaken
the terror in our minds and keep
us on our toes deep in the forest
in the middle of the night. The owls
led our way and the wilderness
transformed into a sanctuary.
The adventures we shared together
will always remain tattooed on
the pages of my skin. They tell a
story that we began together and
which continues being woven to
this very day. It's the same old
story about how we all were in
this together and how each and
every one of us is also going away
someday and though it will be the far-
thest we can manage to tell our own
tale we may rest assured it will be
continued like one of the old pulp
serials by all our friends which survive
us and manage to continue
the saga whispering in the wind.
